I am drawn to President Trump’s ideas, but simply cannot follow a person of poor character. No matter how strong I feel on that path, it will never lead me to greatness. There is more to the American presidency than maintaining sovereignty and prosperity. I don’t just seek power for our magnificent country; I seek moral eminence.

The record doesn’t show Obama to have been the most effective president. I often disagreed with his domestic policy decisions. I didn’t support his inflammatory rhetoric on race relations. I wonder whether he caused unnecessary divide with his response to police brutality concerns.

But in the big picture, he did something so powerful it is sacred.

He and Michelle restored our national faith in the power of human decency. They reconstructed our belief in marriage and the holiness of vows. They demonstrated genuine respect for one another, their family and their civic responsibilities. At all times, they conducted themselves with elegance, grace and a proud integrity. You may not have agreed with President Obama’s policies, but you knew his decisions were carefully-made. He demanded actual evidence. He was a caring, concerned and merciful leader. He exemplified the excellence I want America to portray.

So much of my pride (and personal peace) comes from believing that we represent light in a world of hate and pain. Real Americans are the best on Earth. Ferocious in their unwavering honor. Fierce enough to deliver on their word and so mighty that they needn’t employ evil to further goodness. Strong enough to be better than the rest.

I’ve heard talk lately that goes like this: “I don’t care what he does in his personal life. I care if he’s a good president.” In my opinion, he can’t be a good president because he’s not a good man.
